The British Middle Class

As the new ‘Middle Britain’ report shows that there are over half of the population say they are working class (53%), and over four in ten Britons (43%) now see themselves as middle class.

In fact, as the article said, the number of Britons who regard themselves as middle class has risen by nearly a half (44%) in the last 40 years. It means there is a trend that the middle class population will become more and more in the future.

To compare the middle class and working class people, it is not hard to find that the people, who are middle class, can earn more money than the working class, but with easier work. Furthermore, the middle class people can get better insurance and education than working class people.

In my opinion that is why more people wish they could be the one of the middle class.

Exploring British Newspapers

There are 11 national daily newspapers in the Britain. There are two kinds of the newspapers here. We can separate them from their size. One is with larger size and more details and information about the national and international news. The other one is with smaller size and less details about the news, but they usually have more pictures and advertisement. We can call these two kinds newspapers serious papers and tabloids. In addition, both of these two kinds of newspapers have their own reasons to attract people. And now I should talk about one newspaper of them which I usually read about.

When I take the train to go to the other places, I often take a newspaper named ‘Metro’ from the train station. In fact, this newspaper is free, that means maybe you can not get too much professional details or comment from this newspaper, but that not means this newspaper is not useful. In comparison, this newspaper is very useful for me. There are lots of advertisements and they contain much useful information, and the articles are not hard to read because they haven’t too many hard words, and it often come with many pictures that make me understand the article easily. Furthermore, it can help me to spend the boring time on the train and it really help to improve my reading skills.

In conclusion, although I only talk about one kind of the newspapers, in fact it can confirm that every kind of the newspapers have their one way to attract their readers.

St David's Day

To commemorate a great person’s dying, the first day of March is also called St David’s Day in Wales. The people would be celebrating St. David's Day in one way or another at that day.

Saint David was the patron saint of Wales, and he lived in sixth century. During his life, he was the archbishop of Wales, and he was one of many early saints who helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain.

And it said that when Celtic tribes invaded Wales in sixth century, Saint David taught people to put the daffodil on the maps to be the marks, and leaded the people to defeat the invader. And now it becomes a custom to put the daffodil on the maps at the St David’s Day in Wales, to commemorate that great person.

Employment in Britain

To be a international student in Britain now, I am very interesting in getting more knowledge about the employment in Britain, and now I did some discovery about it, special to the international staff’s work situation in Britain.

Britain is the only one country to allow the students to do the part-time job of all the countries which speak English. And at June 1999, the government of Britain canceled the law that the students could not do the part-time job without the Work Permit if they did not belong to E.C. That means if you had the visa of students you can take a part-time job now, but it also need to apply a NI (National Insurance Number) card, because with that card, the students can get job easier, and it would avoid to unfair payment.

How to get job? There are many ways, like go to the Job Centre, read the advertisement of the newspaper, and be introduced by friends. Most of the employer needs the letter of recommendation, we can ask the teachers, the landlords or any native you know to help you writing it.

The government of Britain has changed many laws to increase the economy, it contains to encourage the international people working in the Britain. And it needs some special person of ability. For example, Nurse, Consultant Doctors, Electronic Engineering, Analyst Programmer, Business Analyst, Audiologist and so on.

In conclusion, now in Britain, it is easier to get job if you really have the ability, whatever you are native or not.

Health Issues in Britain

As we know, almost every developed country would has quality of its health care. In Britain, although NHS (National Health Services) is as known as the one of the best and biggest Health Care Services Organization in the world, but in fact, it also be criticized the worst one in the Europe for sometimes.

The most important reason that the NHS has been criticized is maybe it is too ‘old’. Every citizen or the one who has the resident rights in Britain, all have the rights to enjoy the healthy care by free. But because of the NHS’ equipment is too old, maybe sometimes you should wait for the operation for as long as many years. In 2000, the government has invested lots of money to improve the equipment and want to make the NHS would be the best one in the world.

But there are also many factors inequitable in Britain. For example, although the workers who have low income, would enjoy the rights to take the health care by free, but their family can not enjoy the rights. And so, lots of poor men can not go to the hospital because they have no money.

At last, although there are many issues inequitable in Britain, but the government have done many policies to improve the NHS, so we can believe that it would be better in the future.

Education In Britain

As we know, the developed country’s government attaches importance to the education very much, it is special in Britain, and this is why I choose to come here to continue my further education. British education relies heavily on public funds. However, this doesn' t mean that every educational institution relies public funds, for example, there are many private school and homeschool in Britain.

Firstly I should talk some my ideas about the private school. In my opinion maybe the private schools are always better than the public school, it appeared that the tuition of private school is much more expensive. When I went to the internet web I found that the buildings, classrooms, or the style of the private school are much better and more beautiful than the public’s, and almost all the famous person’ s children study in the private school, because maybe if you paid more you got more. However, it leads to a problem that if you had not enough money to support your children to go to the private school but you do really feeling not good to the public school, what shall you do? Many parents choose to educate their children at home, it is called homeschooling.

In fact, I do not feel strange about homeschooling because it was very universal in China before. In Chinese antique the family would be very big and there were maybe lots of children in the family, the parents always employed a teacher coming home to teach their children. It is a little similar with the homeschooling in Britain, but at that time the homeschooling is normally but now it is not commonly seen, but as the report said it seem more and more families choose this way to educate the children. However, of course it has advantages and disadvantages, I should talk many my ideas about that then.

In my opinion, the most disadvantage is that the children can not communicate with the other children if they did not go to school but educated at home. What is the children’ s most important thing? I think it is playing , though playing they can learn lots of things and they can learn how to communicate with the other people, the school is the biggest ‘playground’ to the children, they can know many friends there, play with their friends, talk with their friends, learn from their friends, but if the children just go to school at home, they would spend most of time with their parents, they can not know about the other children’s funny, I think it is not good for the children’s future. But it also has many advantages, as the report said, the children who do the homeschooling can get better education than they go to the normally public school, they can learn something fast because the ‘teacher’ just teach them only, and the ‘teacher’ is the most closely people to them, and of course if the children did not go to the public school they would not learn some bad things like many bad habits.

In conclusion, every thing has its advantaged or disadvantaged parts, the most important is that you should choose the things which fit yourself most.

Halloween

On the night of 31st Oct you can find Halloween parties in various different parts of the world, specially in the United States, Canada, Britain and Ireland.

More than 2,000 years ago, from what we know of the Celts, it seems part of their religious calendar was a night at the beginning of winter when they believed the spirits of dead people could return to walk the earth, on that night some Celtics tribes lit bonfires to scare away evil spirits, or even disguised themselves as ghosts, witches and other scary creatures so that the real ghosts would not attach. The event survived into the Christian era, and eventually received the name of Halloween and fixed date in the modern calendar—31st October.

One of the most well- known Halloween decorations is a hollow pumpkin, usually with a candle inside, and a mouth and eyes cut into the skin to make a scary looking ‘face’. As for Halloween activities, one of the most traditional is ‘trick or treating’ in which children and teenager (sometimes dressed as ghosts or witches, or in some other Halloween costume) go around knocking on people’ door on the evening of October 31st and asking for small ‘treats’, usually sweets. The people now carry out the pumpkin with candle to scare away the ghost and the children ask for the ‘treat’ maybe means they pretend the ghost to ask for some ‘treat’ then they would not attach or do the trick to the people.

Now the Halloween is a very popular festival in the world, special in the North America.
